How to Wash and Care for Your Soccer Jersey (And Keep It Looking New)
Why Proper Jersey Care Matters
A soccer jersey is not an ordinary t-shirt. The fabric, printing, and construction are specifically engineered for athletic performance — lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking. That's exactly what makes them feel great to wear, and exactly why they need a little more care than your regular laundry.
Treat a jersey the wrong way — too hot, too rough, too much detergent — and you'll end up with cracked numbers, faded colors, and a misshapen collar after just a few washes. Treat it right, and it will look as good five years from now as it does the day it arrives.
Here's everything you need to know.
The Golden Rules of Jersey Care
Before getting into the specifics, these five rules apply to every soccer jersey, regardless of brand, design, or price point:
Always wash cold. Heat is the enemy of performance fabric. Hot water breaks down the fibers that make jerseys light and breathable, and causes colors to fade faster. Cold water every time, no exceptions.
Turn it inside out. This protects the printed numbers, names, badges, and crests from direct agitation during the wash cycle. The inside of the jersey takes the friction; the outside stays sharp.
Skip the fabric softener. Fabric softener leaves a coating on performance fabric that clogs the moisture-wicking pores. Your jersey will feel soft for one wash and then stop performing properly. Leave it out entirely.
Never tumble dry. The heat and tumbling action of a dryer are the single fastest way to ruin a soccer jersey. Hang dry every time — it takes a little longer but preserves the fabric, fit, and printing indefinitely.
Wash promptly after wear. Sweat and dirt that sit in fabric for days are much harder to remove than fresh stains, and can break down fibers over time. The sooner you wash it, the better.
Step-by-Step Washing Guide
Machine Washing (Recommended)
Machine washing is perfectly fine for soccer jerseys — as long as you follow the right settings.
Step 1: Turn the jersey inside out. Always. Every time. This single step does more to preserve the printed design than anything else.
Step 2: Check the care label. Every jersey has a care label sewn inside — check it before washing. Most performance jerseys are rated for cold machine wash, but always confirm.
Step 3: Separate from heavy items. Don't wash your jersey with jeans, towels, or anything with zips, hooks, or rough textures. These cause abrasion that damages the fabric surface. Wash jerseys with other lightweight items — other sportswear, t-shirts, lightweight clothing.
Step 4: Use a gentle cycle. Select the delicate or gentle cycle on your machine. This reduces the agitation that can stress the fabric and stretch the collar or hem.
Step 5: Use a small amount of mild detergent. Less is more. Use half the amount you'd normally use for a regular load — performance fabric doesn't need much soap, and excess detergent can leave residue that affects the fabric's properties. Choose a detergent without bleach or optical brighteners.
Step 6: Cold water, always. Set the temperature to cold — 30°C / 86°F maximum. Never warmer.
Step 7: Skip the spin cycle if possible. Or use the lowest spin setting available. High-speed spinning can distort the shape of the jersey and stress the fabric at the seams.
Hand Washing (For Best Results)
If you want to be extra careful — particularly with a special edition, a personalized jersey, or a kit you're keeping as a collector's piece — hand washing is the gentlest option.
Fill a sink or basin with cold water and add a small amount of mild liquid detergent. Submerge the jersey (inside out) and gently agitate it by hand for a minute or two, paying attention to any soiled areas. Rinse thoroughly in cold water until the water runs clear. Gently press out excess water — never wring or twist the jersey, which can distort the shape.
How to Dry Your Jersey
Always air dry. Lay the jersey flat on a clean, dry towel, or hang it on a hanger or drying rack. Avoid hanging it in direct sunlight for extended periods — UV exposure can cause colors to fade over time.
If you're in a hurry, hanging the jersey near a fan speeds up drying without any heat damage.
Never use a tumble dryer. Even a low heat setting can cause the fabric to shrink, the printing to crack, and the collar to lose its shape. It is never worth the risk.
Never iron directly over printed areas. If you need to remove wrinkles, turn the jersey inside out and use a low heat iron on the reverse side only. Better yet, hang it while slightly damp and let gravity do the work.
Dealing with Common Stains
Grass stains: Pre-treat with a small amount of liquid laundry detergent or a dedicated stain remover before washing. Work it gently into the stain with your fingers and let it sit for 15 minutes before washing as normal.
Mud: Let it dry completely first — attempting to clean wet mud just spreads it further into the fabric. Once dry, brush off as much as possible before pre-treating and washing.
Food and drink: Rinse immediately with cold water to prevent the stain from setting. Blot — never rub — to absorb as much liquid as possible before treating and washing.
Sweat stains: White vinegar is effective at removing sweat build-up and eliminating odor. Add half a cup to the wash cycle in place of fabric softener, or soak the affected area for 30 minutes before washing.
Blood: Cold water only — hot water sets blood stains permanently. Rinse immediately under cold running water, then wash as normal.

Storing Your Jersey
How you store a jersey matters almost as much as how you wash it.
Hang it, don't fold it. Folding creates creases in the fabric that can become permanent over time. Use a plastic or padded hanger to hang jerseys in your wardrobe — this also helps maintain the shape of the collar and shoulders.
Keep it away from direct sunlight. Extended UV exposure fades colors, even when the jersey is just hanging in storage.
Store clean, never dirty. Never put a worn jersey directly into storage. Sweat and moisture left in fabric can cause mildew and permanent odor. Always wash before storing, even if you're planning to wear it again soon.
For long-term storage or collectors: If you're keeping a jersey as a collector's piece rather than wearing it, store it in a sealed garment bag or acid-free tissue paper in a cool, dark, dry place. This protects it from dust, moisture, and UV damage indefinitely.
Special Considerations for Different Jersey Types
Personalized jerseys (with names and numbers): The printed or heat-applied lettering and numbering is the most vulnerable part of a personalized jersey. Always wash inside out, always cold, always air dry. Never fold directly over the printing when storing.
Authentic/match jerseys: These tend to use slightly more premium fabric than standard replica jerseys. All the same rules apply — if anything, be even more careful with heat and agitation.
Vintage jerseys: Older jerseys may have more delicate fabric or faded printing. Hand washing is always the safer option for anything more than a few years old.
