Mbappé Equals Messi's Record, France Into Semis — Spain vs Belgium Today

France 2–0 Morocco: Inevitable and Brilliant

Kylian Mbappé had a goal and an assist after missing a first-half penalty kick, Ousmane Dembélé scored the other goal, and France beat Morocco 2-0 in the World Cup quarterfinals.

France continues its march towards the World Cup final with what turned out to be a pretty straightforward quarterfinal against Morocco. Les Bleus go through to the semifinals, where they will play either Spain or Belgium.

Another match, another dominant performance by France. Les Bleus continue their masterly run through the World Cup, winning by multiple goals for the fifth time in six matches.

The Goals

60' — Mbappé 1-0

It was a brilliant finish after the superstar sorted his feet out just inside the box. He then looked up and swept his effort into the far corner. Mbappé's goal in the 60th minute was the 20th of his World Cup career, moving him level with Argentina captain Lionel Messi.

The Golden Boot race is now tied. Messi and Mbappé — both on 20 all-time World Cup goals. Both still in the tournament. Both with at least one more match to play.

66' — Dembélé 2-0

Dembélé was almost invited to shoot and he very much obliged, sending his effort squirming past the Morocco goalkeeper. Mbappé had a goal and an assist — the skipper turned provider six minutes after his goal, laying the ball into the path of Ousmane Dembélé, who curled a low shot past Yassine Bounou to put the game beyond Morocco.

The Context

France now remains on track to become only the third nation to play in the final of three consecutive World Cups.

France are the toast of the city in which the world-famous Cheers bar is located. It was a dominant attacking display from Les Bleus, epitomised by their 3.04 xG compared to Morocco's 0.14. Now the only player to record 10 or more direct goal involvements at two different World Cups, Mbappé is now the skipper who turned provider.

France held a 21-4 advantage in shots and 8-1 edge in shots on target for the game.

Mbappé Injury Concern

Kylian Mbappé has played down concerns over what he described as a "knock on his ankle" during France's 2-0 World Cup quarterfinal win over Morocco. With only a few minutes to go until stoppage time, Mbappé was spotted on the bench with his cleats off, with what appeared to be an ice pack affixed to his right foot/ankle area.

Morocco — The End of a Historic Run

Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi said his team will aim to "eliminate France in four years' time" after Les Bleus inflicted a second-successive World Cup defeat on the Atlas Lions.

Morocco go home having reached the quarterfinals of back-to-back World Cups — the first African nation to achieve this in history. They drew with Brazil. They eliminated Netherlands on penalties. They dismantled Canada 3-0. Their journey ends here, but their legacy is enormous.

Morocco is on the longest unbeaten streak of any team at the World Cup — a run of 34 games — before tonight's match.

The match that decides who faces France in the semifinals in Dallas on July 14.

All of France will now turn their attention to today's quarterfinal matchup between Spain and Belgium. Spain go into the game as favorites and a win for La Roja could set up a mouth-watering rematch of the 2024 European Championship semifinal against the winners from today. Goals from Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo gave Spain a 2-1 win on that occasion as Luis de la Fuente's side overturned an early deficit.

Belgium's recent record against France, however, is far from favorable. The Red Devils have lost five on the bounce against France including a 1-0 loss in the 2024 European Championships and another 1-0 defeat in the 2018 World Cup semifinal. Belgium will be hoping it can right the wrongs from its time in Russia eight years ago with revenge against France this time round — if they beat Spain.

Spain arrive as the tournament's most complete team — Yamal, Pedri, Rodri, Morata. They eliminated Portugal with a 91st-minute Merino goal and have looked unstoppable. Yamal has become the youngest player since 1958 to play in a World Cup quarterfinal at just 18 years old.

Belgium dismantled the USA 4-1 in Seattle — De Ketelaere's brace, Lukaku sealing it. De Bruyne has been the tournament's best creative player. Belgium want Spain. Belgium vs France in the semifinals would be the Red Devils' dream path to a final.
