The Round of 32 Is Done — Here's What Happened

The last three matches of the Round of 32 delivered exactly the kind of drama this expanded World Cup promised.

Argentina 3–2 Cape Verde (a.e.t.)

Cape Verde was so close to the greatest upset in World Cup history, but they will have to settle for giving Argentina the scare of a lifetime in the Round of 32.

Messi spurned a one-on-one chance to get Argentina ahead almost immediately and Cape Verde closed ranks to drag the world champions to Extra Time. Lisandro Martinez wrested the lead back with a stunning finish at the near post off a corner in the second minute of ET and just as Argentina thought that would be enough, Sidny Lopes Cabral brought the roof down with the goal of the match, a stunning curler from a tight angle that gave Emi Martinez no chance. Six minutes into the second half of ET, Cristian Romero rose highest to flick home a Messi corner into goal via Diny Borges' arm and give Argentina the lead for a third and final time.

Argentina survive. Cape Verde go home with their heads held impossibly high. The blue and white stripes are through to the Round of 16, where they face Egypt in Atlanta on July 7.

Egypt 1–1 Australia (4–2 on penalties)

Egypt advanced to the Round of 16 after a dramatic 4-2 win in the penalty shootout after Australia came from behind to pull level at 1-1 in extra time. Harry Souttar and 18-year-old Lucas Harrington missed their kicks for Australia, while all four of Egypt's converted, including Mohamed Salah with a panenka.

Emam Ashour had put Egypt ahead early in the 13th minute after running in behind his blocked shot to convert an incoming cross with a superb header at the near post. Australia equalized but could not find a winner. Egypt advance to face Argentina in Atlanta on July 7 — Mohamed Salah vs Lionel Messi. Two of the greatest players of their generation. One match.

Colombia vs Ghana

Colombia vs Ghana at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City was still being played at time of publication. The winner faces Switzerland in the Round of 16 in Vancouver on July 7.

🇨🇦 Canada vs 🇲🇦 Morocco · 1pm ET · Houston

The co-host nation against the two-time consecutive deep World Cup runners. Canada will face Morocco on Saturday at NRG Stadium in Houston.

Canada have been one of the tournament's great stories — a 6-0 demolition of Qatar, a tidy win over South Africa, and a squad that has exceeded every expectation. Morocco eliminated Netherlands on penalties and arrive in Houston as one of the most feared teams left in the tournament.

This is the match of the day for pure quality and storyline. The red Canadian jersey against the iconic red and green Moroccan kit. A co-host nation against the African giants who just won't stop.

France face Paraguay at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

France have been the tournament's most dominant team — 12 goals scored, 1 conceded, Mbappé with 6 goals and within one of Messi's all-time record. Paraguay eliminated Germany on penalties and have shown they can beat anyone on their day.

Nobody gives Paraguay a chance today. But then again, nobody gave them a chance against Germany either.
