September's Biggest Football Matches — and the Jerseys You Need Before They Kick Off

Published: August 29, 2026 — September is when football really begins. The Champions League starts. The big derbies arrive. International breaks add national team storylines. This month has Arsenal vs Chelsea, the Manchester derby, the first Champions League matchdays, La Liga's El Clásico build-up, and Yamal's first full month as a World Cup champion playing in front of Camp Nou. Here are September's must-watch matches — and the jersey for each one.

Why September Is Football's Most Important Month

August is the warm-up. September is when the table starts to mean something. Points dropped now cost title challenges in May. The Champions League begins, which means European nights under the floodlights. And with the transfer window closing August 31, every squad is finally settled — you know which player is wearing which shirt for the rest of the season.

There is a two-week international break the weekends of September 26 and October 3 — so the Premier League action in September is compressed into three matchweeks. Every game matters more when there are fewer of them.

Premier League September Fixtures

🔴 Arsenal vs 🔵 Chelsea · September 6 · Emirates Stadium

Arsenal host Chelsea on September 6 in a marquee early-season London derby live on Sky Sports.

The defending champions against Xabi Alonso's Chelsea — the match that will tell us whether the summer's most high-profile managerial appointment can immediately challenge at the top. Arsenal won 3-0 on opening day. Chelsea drew at Fulham under Alonso in the Monday night curtain-closer. The gap between them is small. This match narrows it or widens it.

For jersey buyers: the red Arsenal home — champions' crest — against Chelsea's highest-rated kit in the Premier League (4.21/5 fan rating). Two of the season's most compelling shirts in the same match.

⬛ Manchester United vs 🔵 Manchester City · September 13 · Old Trafford

Manchester United entertain Manchester City on September 13 in the first Manchester derby of the season, live on Sky Sports at Old Trafford.

This fixture always delivers. This season it carries extra weight: United lost to Hull City on opening day under Michael Carrick, while City came from behind to beat Bournemouth. Both clubs need a statement. The Manchester derby — the most-watched club fixture in the world — provides it.

The white United away kit (one of the season's most acclaimed shirt designs) against City's gradient home jersey. Two of the Premier League's best-designed kits in the same match, at the world's most famous football ground.

🔴 Liverpool vs Aston Villa · September — TBC

Andoni Iraola makes his first return to Bournemouth on September 20 in a subplot that the cameras will love — the manager who transformed the Cherries now returning as Liverpool boss. But the home fixture against Aston Villa earlier in the month is the bigger match for title implications. Villa are European football's form club, Liverpool are rebuilding under a new manager. This is the fixture that tells us where Liverpool actually are.

Champions League Returns: September 8 Onwards

The 2026-27 Champions League league phase starts September 8. The final will be held on June 5, 2027 at Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.

Nine English clubs in European competition this season. Five in the Champions League, three in the Europa League, one in the Conference League. The Champions League nights in September are when the Premier League clubs discover where they stand in European football — and when the club jerseys carry continental significance.

The English clubs in the Champions League group phase:

Arsenal — returning as Premier League champions, Champions League finalists last season. The Emirates under the floodlights on a European night, in the red home jersey, is one of football's great atmospheres.

Manchester City — always a factor. The gradient home kit in European competition adds to the visual appeal of an already well-designed shirt.

Liverpool — Iraola's first European nights as manager. The famous red under the Anfield lights.

Aston Villa — Europa League winners last season, now in the Champions League. The claret and blue in European competition for the first time since their 1982 title.

Chelsea — Xabi Alonso's first Champions League campaign as manager. The blue or away kit on European nights.

La Liga September: The Yamal Watch Begins

Barcelona open their La Liga campaign on August 23 against Elche. By September, Lamine Yamal — World Cup champion, La Liga MVP, Ballon d'Or favourite — will be in full swing at Camp Nou ahead of the October 26 ceremony in London.

Every La Liga match Yamal plays in September is, in effect, Ballon d'Or audition footage. The Barcelona blaugrana jersey worn in those matches carries the weight of a generation-defining player at the peak of his powers.

La Liga's previous season saw Kylian Mbappé score 25 goals in his first campaign at Real Madrid. Now Mbappé is under Mourinho — a manager who built his greatest team around Ronaldo at this same club. The September La Liga fixtures will tell us immediately whether Mourinho's Real Madrid can live with Barcelona.

International Break: September 26 – October 5

No league games the weekends of September 26 and October 3 due to the international break.

International breaks mean national team jerseys. The October 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying cycle begins — with the 2030 World Cup in South America on the horizon. For England, Argentina, Spain, France, Norway — the teams whose World Cup stories ended just weeks ago — these are the first national team fixtures since the tournament.

For the first time in his international career, Lionel Messi faces a genuine question mark about whether he continues. The Argentina jersey worn in September's international break may be his next chapter — or it may be farewell.

The September Jersey Calendar: What to Buy and When

Transfer Window Closes Sunday August 31

The summer transfer window closes on August 31, 2026. This is the last weekend to buy a jersey and know for certain the player will still be at that club when it arrives. After Sunday, no new signings — the squad is settled until January.

The practical implication: personalised jerseys with a player's name carry the most risk in the final days of a transfer window. Names and numbers on jerseys ordered before August 31 are safe for the full season. Order today.
