France will be looking to reach their third straight semifinal and to become only the third team to advance to the final four three tournaments in a row.

France have been the tournament's most dominant team — five wins from five, 13 goals scored, just one conceded. In their last match, France prevailed 1-0 against Paraguay. Mbappé has six goals and is chasing Messi's Golden Boot lead. Dembélé, Griezmann and Tchouaméni provide the depth that makes France different from every other team remaining.

Morocco will be without star forward Ismael Saibari for their World Cup quarterfinal with France on Thursday. The Atlas Lions arrive having beaten Netherlands on penalties and dismantled Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16. They have already made history as the first African nation in back-to-back World Cup quarterfinals.

In order to break down France, the Atlas Lions will need their stars to be at their best. Ounahi in midfield, the Mazraoui brothers combining with Amrabat — Morocco have the tactical discipline to make this uncomfortable for France. But France are the heaviest favourites of any quarterfinal match.

TOMORROW — QF2: 🇧🇪 Belgium vs 🇪🇸 Spain · 3pm ET · Los Angeles

The most technically gifted match of the quarterfinals. Spain destroyed Portugal 1-0 with Merino's 91st-minute winner. Belgium demolished the USA 4-1 with De Ketelaere's brace.

Spain are the 2010 world champions playing their most complete football since that era. Lamine Yamal — 18 years old — is the most exciting player at this tournament. Belgium have De Bruyne pulling strings, Lukaku providing the finishing touch, and a tactical flexibility that caused the USA endless problems. But Spain's pressing game and technical superiority make them slight favourites.

SATURDAY — QF3: 🇳🇴 Norway vs 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England · 5pm ET · Miami

England ended Mexico's World Cup with the best win on foreign soil in their history — Bellingham's brace at the Azteca, playing with 10 men, silencing 87,000 fans. Kane added a penalty. It was England's finest moment in decades.

Norway beat Brazil 2-1 — Haaland heading home in the 80th minute, driving in a second in the 90th. Haaland struck down Brazil as Norway reached the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in their history.

SATURDAY — QF4: 🇦🇷 Argentina vs 🇨🇭 Switzerland · 9pm ET · Kansas City

Argentina would be well-served to stop living on the edge. The defending champions have trailed in two consecutive matches — the Cape Verde scare in extra time, the 0-2 deficit against Egypt. Both times they survived. Both times Messi delivered.

Switzerland goes back to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1954. The Swiss beat Algeria 2-0, then eliminated Colombia 4-3 on penalties in a scoreless 120 minutes. They are organized, disciplined, and dangerous on the counter. Nobody gives them a chance against Argentina. But then again, nobody gave Cape Verde a chance, or Egypt, either.
